Capitola Junior Guards
The Capitola Junior Lifeguard Program is one of Capitola’s premier activities for children from the age of 6 through 17. It is a very active, physically challenging and competitive program which helps build self-confidence, self esteem and respect for the sea while at the same time teaching discipline and team participation. This program is open to Capitola resident children and non-resident children from throughout Santa Cruz County. Capitola’s Jr. Guard program is wildly popular, and that is evidenced every weekday throughout the summer as parents pick up and drop off their children to participate in these rigorous activities.
Since our involvement with the Junior Guards began in 2010, Capitola Foundation has been providing scholarships to many deserving children who would not have been able to participate without financial help. This financial aid has resulted in over 200 children being able to participate n the summer program. Our Foundation, which bridges Public Safety with Community Services, vigorously supports the program because we believe in investing in children; we believe that these children will benefit from the lessons they learn while participating in the program during their elementary through high school years and that they will become positive members and leaders of our community.
The program provides instruction in the basic fundamentals of ocean water safety, first aid, lifesaving, fitness, and good sportsmanship. Activities include mock rescues, beach and water games, fun work-outs, and competitions. Program fees include instruction, official t-shirt, handouts, and special discounts with local merchants. Each session wraps up with an awards picnic at Jade Street Park.
